Inspiration: Moonrise Kingdom

Hey guys!
Wowza, that was quite a hiatus! I'm back from Ireland, got a month off before I jet off to Hong Kong then start my new job in VICTORIA'S SECRET BOND STREET! Aah I can't tell you how excited I am! Anyways, I've got a month of lazing around so I'm full-timing on the blogging front! Well, apart from the foolishness that is not being able to find my camera lead and therefore not being able to upload my Blogger's Boutique post! Grrr. In the meantime, head over the gorgeous Lucy's blog, LULUTRIXABELLE, who I went to the event with, she's got loads of great photographs!

I thought I'd do a post inspired by the amazingness that is Moonrise Kingdom.

Moonrise Kingdom, 2012, Wes Anderson.
Starring Kara Hayward, Jared Gilman, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.

Moonrise is the latest outing from indie-quirky filmmaker Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox). Full of whimsy and wonder, it centres around two 12 year olds who run away together on the tiny island of Penzance.
There are some truly wonderful performances. Introducing both Hayward and Gilman, their understated and natural performances only add to the humour and intrigue of this little film. Norton is just delightful as Boy Scout Master Ward and disfuntional couple Frances McDormand and Bill Murray are compelling and hilarous viewing. Oh, and Bruce Willis does a bang up job as Police Captain Sharp.

What really struck me about the film was it's gorrrgeous cinematography, lighting and costume. Wonderful 60's outfits and quirky little costumes (including a rather snazzy looking raven) make for a real feast for the eyes. It got me thinking about all the other inspirations this films draws in relation to fashion, so I put together a little scrapbook of inspiration.

Mad about RedRock!

HeyHey! So I was lucky enough to be invited up to Northampton for the RedRock pop-up shop to cover the event. RedRock is a vintage, handmade and reworked online boutique created by  fashion and textiles graduate and stylist extraordinaire Kiran Lall (read my post about RedRock HERE). The event kicked off at 12, and I arrived on the dot (an hour later than I wanted thanks to delayed trains and my general tardiness). There was already a gaggle of eager, fashion junkies waiting for the doors to open, and we were soon welcomed in to peruse the racks of vintage and handmade pieces.

The place was packed! Shoppers got stuck in straight away, clutching Kiran's unique pieces to their chests and ducking off into the make shift changing rooms to try them on. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly - everyone happily chatting to one another and discussing which items they had their eyes on. The clothes themselves were to die for:

Prints, prints prints! Aztec, paisley, floral pieces-a-plenty!

Mouth watering, acid bright colours, mixed with different textures and materials - crochet, lace, sheer chiffons and velvets.

Re-worked levi shorts are a staple - how cute are these bad boys?!

RedRocks signature studded collars.

Handmade shorts in gorgeous flamingo print (a favourite of Paloma Faith's!)

And there were plenty of fashion forward ladies in attendance!

Nicola, a student at the University of Northampton found out about the event from flyers posted around the uni. She was definitely in a mood to buy "I'm going to a few festivals and travelling this summer so looking for some crazy clothes to take with me!"

Charlotte, a blogger from Northampton [check out her fab blog HERE] and Kiran (not the designer!) are friends of Kiran's (the designer) and came down to support her - and pick up a few goodies of course.

Carrie, who'd just moved back to Northampton from north west London has her finger firmly on the fashion pulse, "I'm looking for something to wear - I'm off to the Bambi and Manson press party in Whiskey Mist tonight!"

The lady herself was kept busy all day - talking to customers, taking alteration orders, and making sure everything was fully stocked.

Kiran, centre, helps a customer. With Ben Johnson (right), the stylist for the event and editor of Personality to Pavement, street style.

Cute puppy appeared from next door! Emily, PR assistant, has a good hug.

The Team with customers.

I finally managed to steal a minute of Kiran's time to have a cuppa and ask her a few questions. Having graduated with a fashion and textiles degree, she knew from day one she wanted to start her own line. Starting with simple customized and vintage T-shirts, she quickly got her business model together and approached the Princes Trust and secured other small loans. In 2009, RedRock took off.

Not only do they have a site, they also sell on ASOS marketplace ("our vintage dresses do so well on ASOS", Kiran says), and are constantly in talks with other major retailers. But Kiran is most proud of her collaboration with Oxfam - she works with their stock and a percentage of the profits go directly to Oxfam. "That's what we're all about really - recycling and reusing, sustainable clothing sourced and made here in the UK. I'm definitely proud to be working with Oxfam."

She loves what she does. She recently reduced her time in the studio to five days a week "my boyfriend never got to see me!", and when she's not sewing like mad and sourcing materials, she lectures in fashion marketing at both the University of Northampton and Luton. Her only advice to up and coming designers and entrepreneurs is to love what you do. "You really have to want it. You have to be prepared to work day and night. But for me, I love what I do so it doesn't even feel like work."

All in all it was a fabulous day, and of course I picked up a gorgeous piece myself! I'll be uploading a haul video of all my recent purchases and I'll definitely be featuring my RedRock piece!

Outfit post: Whistling Dixi.

Hey kids,

Any craic? Well I got a beautiful bumper package from Dixi the other day (click through for link!) and I was most delighted. Well, I ordered it aaages when they were doing a crazy sale, but got it sent to my home in London while I was in Ireland. So when I got last week it was sitting there ready for me to rip into!
*NB* I'm not too sure on some of the prices as I ordered so long ago! Also, apologies for the crappy lighting, it's been grey for weeks!

Clockwise LtoR
Silver bracelet (part of set), two finger hearts ring (£2), square red/white stone ring (part of set), jade-style heart pendant (£1), knuckle ring (part of set), horse ring (50p), Cameo ring (£2), cross ear cuff (part of set), stackable rings (part of set)

Two finger heart ring.

Square ring, cameo ring, horse ring.

Cross ear cuff.

Such pretty pieces! I adore the silver bracelet and the knuckle ring, I can see myself getting loads of wear out of them, and how affordable! The five piece set was £10 (I think!) so I will definitely going back to Dixi time and time again!

I decided to take my new jewels out for a spin when I went to TGI's with my pal in Westfields.

*Pink blazer-£40-Sara Berman - LFWend sale*Sleeveless blouse-£12-Internationale*

*Black leggings with leopard insert-£12-Missguided*Coral loafers-£10-Office Sale*

Gold cuff-£1.50-Topshop sale*Bag-Nigerian Market*Rings-Dixi*Nail polish-NARS in Schiap*

*Neck cuff-£6.99-H&M

*Lipstick-£5.49-Kate Moss for Rimmel in shade 12*

I was planning on doing a proper FOTD but the lighting was just so dodgy you can barely make out the lipstick colour!
Also, watch out for my first video, a haul, coming up soon! Hopefully over the weekend :)
Any plans this weekend dolls?
